Souderton Borough was incorporated on December 15, 1887. Its original acreage was taken from Franconia Township. Additional annexations to this small borough, one in 1915 and one in 1917, brought the total area to 1.25 square miles. Souderton’s businesses, industries and stores developed over the years, as the residential population grew. Today, this small community finds itself with almost no vacant land left for development. It should be noted that the Borough of Souderton is considered the heart of the Indian Valley, a term used to describe Souderton and the surrounding area. Moreover, some residents and businesses may have a Souderton mailing address, but actually be located in Franconia Township.

On March 31, 1732, Franconia Township was incorporated from what was a portion of Salford Township. Settled primarily by Dutch and German speaking immigrants, the township still retains much of its rural character and charm. Today, while some farms remain, new houses, small businesses, and other developments are noticeable. Township planners hope to concentrate new developments around the township’s boundary with Souderton and Telford Boroughs. Today, many signs of the old Pennsylvania German cultural practices can still be seen. It should be noted that some homes and businesses may have a Souderton or Telford mailing address, but are actually located in Franconia Township.
